Census 2027 guide
Fill in Census 2027 yourself, online
For the first time, households can answer the census on a government website before the enumerator comes to the door. It's called self-enumeration, and it's optional.
Where
The only official portal. It works in 16 languages: English, Hindi and 14 others.
When
Only in your area's window, about two weeks before the door-to-door count.
- Phase 1 (homes)
- Every window has closed.
- Phase 2 in Goa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
- 16–30 November 2026
- Phase 2 everywhere else
- Before the February 2027 count; dates not announced yet.
How it works
- 1
Open the portal
Go to se.census.gov.in during your area's window.
- 2
Sign in
Use your mobile number and a few basic details.
- 3
Answer the questions
One person can fill them in for the whole household.
- 4
Get your SE ID
Submit, and you'll get a Self-Enumeration ID by SMS or email.
- 5
Show it at the door
Give the SE ID to the enumerator. They check your answers and submit them.
Good to know
- The enumerator still visits, even if you filled it in online.
- The portal only accepts answers during your area's window. In the snow-bound areas it only worked on devices inside the area.
- Use only se.census.gov.in. Census staff never ask for money or bank PINs.
- The Census Act, 1948 keeps individual census records confidential.
